The Santa Barbara Zoo sits on over 30 acres overlooking East Beach on the coast. It is home to over 700 animals which are housed in areas that reflect their natural habitat. The zoo is also part of an international effort to conserve rare and endangered species. Their breeding program has saved several species from extinction. Sadly, someone broke into the zoo in early 2000 and stole the bald eagles. From the evidence left behind it appears the eagles did not leave alive. They have not been caught. If you know anything about the theft please notify the zoo or Santa Barbara police.
