The Panamint Valley is one valley to the west of Death Valley and it generally on the route the 20-mule teams took to get Borax mined in Death Valley to Mojave. |
Driving the road between the two gives new meaning to the hardships the team drivers must have faced. This picture looks north from the south end of the valley.
There is little to see in the valley; yet it has its own more-recent fame as being the home of Charles Manson and his "family" of followers. Manson lived at Barker Ranch, about seven miles up Goler Wash (a canyon about 25 miles southeast of Ballarat, a mining town in the valley). Manson and eight followers were captured at the ranch 12 October 1969.
