Carmel, an area just south of Monterey was first explored by Sebastian Vizcaino around 1600. He named the area after his patron saint: Our Lady of Carmel. |
The mission San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmelo (Carmel Mission) was established by Father Junipero Serra in 1770 at Monterey and in 1771 it was moved to its present location right next door in Carmel. Father Serra lived at this mission and used it as his headquarters until his death in 1784. His remains lie beneath the floor in front of the altar.
A life size bronze statue of Father Serra can be found in the courtyard of this mission (a like statue can be found at most of the missions Father Serra founded). |
